Are you the kind of person who sees a rust patch and thinks, “I’ve got just the fix for that”? Do you thrive in environments where no two days look the same—and where your skills keep a working vessel running strong? The Marimed Foundation is looking for a capable, hands-on Second Mate to join our crew.
This is not a role for someone who just wants to stand watch and admire the horizon (though there’s plenty of that, too). We’re looking for someone who takes pride in the nuts, bolts, welds, coatings, and systems that keep a steel vessel alive and seaworthy.
What You’ll Do:
• Take an active role in vessel maintenance, with a strong focus on corrosion control and coating systems
• Diagnose and tackle mechanical, structural, and day-to-day repair issues
• Serve as a reliable watchstander and support safe vessel operations
• Work closely with crew and students in a collaborative, learning-focused environment
• Help guide and mentor students gaining real-world experience aboard
What We’re Looking For:
• Experience working aboard vessels (sailing experience is a plus—but not required)
• Practical knowledge of steel vessel maintenance, corrosion, and coatings
• A “jack-of-all-trades” mindset when it comes to repairs and problem-solving
• Strong teaching instincts and patience—this is a working classroom as much as a vessel (SSV = sailing school vessel)
• Initiative, adaptability, and a willingness to get your hands dirty
What We Offer:
• The chance to be part of a mission-driven nonprofit organization that changes the lives of communities in Hawai’i
• Join a team of Marimed Foundation employees that get the work done but have a lot of fun along the way. (Never a dull moment here)
• A dynamic work environment where your skills truly matter and will teach future mariners
• Opportunities to expand your sailing knowledge—we can teach you the sailing side
• The satisfaction of keeping a hardworking vessel in top shape
• Competitive pay and benefits package including a Sam’s Club membership (yep, you read that right, Sam’s Club)
Requirements (not limited to the following):
• One year of experience working aboard a vessel (deckhand, mate, captain)
• Complete a pre-employment USCG drug test and subject to random drug testing for the tenure of your employment
• Be able to lift 75lbs.
• Stand for long periods of time.
• Frequently perform work, walk on decks of ship at sea, climb rigging to a height of 110 feet, and climb ladders without aids.
• Occasionally walk short distance (up to 12 feet) in a bent over or squatting position.
• Background check to include the National Sex Offender Registry and Hawaii Department of Motor Vehicles
If you’re ready to bring your skills aboard and share your knowledge, we’d like to hear from you. Please send your resume and cover letter as an attachment to the link provided in this post.
