I understand homelessness happens. I never had a problem with it and would give people the benefit of the doubt.
But let’s be real. There’s been a drastic increase in homeless well everywhere. Even going to target theyre littered all up and down from there to Walmart w partial daytime encampments.
I was driving through downtown at 930am and a man with his bare bum completely hanging out. I’d be horrified if my daughter was with me.
And these individuals aren’t just the typical old aunties we used to see weaving baskets or uncles who just preferred to live in the jungle and drink every night.
It seems there’s a huge increase in men under the age of 35.
I’m pregnant, have a baby, and a toddler and I don’t feel safe anymore well anywhere anymore. I’m walking by homeless men who are clearly stronger than I and under the influence of either demons, drugs, or both.
I used to be someone who never minded giving food, money. Didn’t bother me…. But these aren’t locals. These are displaced gang members, guys who bought a ticket out here and aren’t contributing to anything productive. At least go be a hippie down in Puna and plant some fruit trees.
Stop giving anything to them. If the police aren’t doing anything about we as the community need to step up. Pray for them. Start calling the police more when seeing inappropriate behavior for the children’s sakes. And def stop giving them money. They are able to stay and thrive clearly because someone is making it too easy.
I wish I could just go down bayfront and setup a tent and bbq with my kids on the ocean whenever I want but last time we tried even sleeping in our truck at the old spots in Kona we were told to leave. There’s hardly even spots to go family camping and then it books out months in advance.
Why aren’t the police telling these people to leave?
Have some compassion on the women and children. Were the ones running the errands and just trying to take little girls to their after school activities and do not need to be caught in anxiety.
I’d move and leave the island if I could but this is my home.
If we all collectively pray for this situation and publicly shame and not condone it, it’ll start to change.
Did you hear about the woman jogging at sunset at liliokulani who got dragged, muffled, and raped behind a banyan tree?
Did you hear about the homeless woman’s body found at wailoa park battered and abused?
These are not the same homeless. Hilo didn’t have crime. Keep Southern California crime in California.
Update: heard story this week of 1 year old who contracted E. coli and salmonella from pavilion at onekahakaha because homeless squat and poop at night. Baby had to go Oahu hospital for 5 days.
This is not ok. And all humans have the right to use a bathroom. Constantly locking them up only makes this situation even harder.
