Papua New Guinea is an amazingly culturally diverse area, with people in each hilly area and river valley producing interesting and unique artwork. This "Museum quality" mask comes from the Kanganaman, in Middle Sepik River region. Masks like this one may represent water or bush spirits. When they are not being used, they hang in the ceiling of houses made specifically for them. Made of woven plant fiber (bamboo) and natural pigments, this enormous woven dance mask, known as a “tumbuan”, with two faces, one on the chest, and one on the head, both with distinctive hooked noses. This two-headed style is specific to Kanganaman village. It is 19" wide, 36" tall with a 10" hanger. Not sure of age, does not look new but very well made with bore hair Wiskers.
