Spec Work Anyone?

Manager/publisher with extensive industry contacts seeks pop or country artist/band with recording studio for “spec work” with seasoned songwriter. Prefer self-contained artists who are singers, musicians, and producers.

Received significant interest from major labels and publishers both here and abroad. Received many offers for publishing, licensing, and digital distribution deals. Secured international radio airplay and numerous indie releases during the past year.

In exchange for “spec work,” I will pitch your original songs without requiring publishing rights, songplugging fees, or management contracts. Must have access to recording studio and be willing to record outside material. Cover bands are welcomed.

I will fully credit your work (e.g., name, photo, bio, and contact information) and personally handle all promotion responsibilities and costs to pitch the project to record labels, publishers, managers, producers, A&R reps, music supervisors, filmmakers, music libraries, etc.

Most managers and publishers only work with signed acts. And yet, many acts cannot get signed without a manager or publisher. So, hit me up if you are interested in a barter. Please include a hyperlink to your music or EPK, if available. Cheers.

Guitarist/Instrumentalist (Pearl Harbor)

Was da haps Oahu. I am a guitarist/instrumentalist who was just told that he will not be able to leave Oahu for about 8 months. SOOOOO, I'm not one to sit idly by and waste time. I figured I'd put together a project group. I'd like to write an album in that time. I have the creative mind to do it as long as I am surrounded by AT A MINIMUM a vocalist that is just as creative. I have gear: Line 6 HD100 Spider Valve, Satchurator, Rotary pedal, Delay, etc, JS1200, Gibson Les Paul, Yamaha DTXplorer, Korg Electribe SX, Korg TR61 (on its way from Cali), Computer, and a BRain.... I've written acoustic, metal, psychedelic, Hip hop, and rock music. Also, I have written music for artists as a studio musician.

All I want to do is create some cool music that cannot be defined in one category. I do not want a metal album, so screamers need not apply. I've already gone thru that stage. I'm looking to write a progressive/psychadelic/rock/hip hop album. My influences currently are Porcupine Tree, Mr Bungle, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Pink Floyd, Ice Cube, and the list goes on. So as you can see, I am not limited by style or substance.

Now for the business portion. What I am looking for are as follows. Drummer, Vocalist (singer/rapper), keyboardist, bassist. All of which must have all of these qualities and I will not settle for less:
1- You must be profiecient with your instrument, I dont care if you can tell me what a Bbmin3dim7#5Aug4 is, cause I couldnt, but i have been playing a long time and have a good ear and can play my instrument well.
2- You must own transportation to get you and your equipment around, we can help if you own lots but you must have at least a car.
3- NO ALCOHOLICs. I love me some Sam Adams beer and Bud Light with lime. But it doesn't interfere with the music.
4- You must be the kind of person who HONORS HIS/HER WORD. To me there is nothing more important than your word. If your gonna be late, thats OK, JUST CALL.
5- I don't do drugs, but I don't mind if you umm enjoy a little of Da kine, as long as it doesn't interfere with the creation of music.
6- You must have Job.
7- You must be over 21.

The reason I set these ground rules is out of respect for all the musicians/creationalists (new word) involved.
I am a cool mofo to hang wit, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Jackie Martling, Dave Chappell are my favorite comedians and listen to them all the time.

Variety is the Spice of Life. This is a colorful state. There is a lot more music that these islands have to offer that are not heard on most saturated - monotone radio stations and in popular clubs. Some musicians gig cause they love and believe in their music. While others gig as a second income to help provide for their family. Yet there are many with natural aptitude who are just followers of fashion. Sadly, there are some barely recognized who are dedicated, boldly passionate, creative souls that hold fast to their integrity and vision. In chorus, there are a few quiet fires burning that continue to make the difference. Variety: the state of being varied or various: DIVERSITY.

I am hoping to hire a small string ensemble (violin, viola, cello, or any similar combination) for a special reception on April 22nd 2010 at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of Oahu. The event will be in the late afternoon/early evening, and will include neoclassical music that I have composed (not very difficult to play) but which needs to be transcribed into the various parts for the occasion. In addition to performing these pieces, the ensemble will be requested to play any classical favorites as they wish. I am prepared to negotiate a reasonable offer for the world premiere performance of these neoclassical pieces in addition to the total time spent playing on the day of the occasion.

We are an established, working R&B band currently auditioning guitarist. Must have impeccable comping chops and be fairly well versed in old school R&B as well as Neo-soul, ie; Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, MJB, Ledesi.
Look foward to your response.
Secondly, Star has the ability to update their site every second if they wanted to...They don't have to wait until a business day to change something on the fricken website.
Like a previous post said, they would never be anonymous and not leave a contact email, nor would it be signed with just a station name; whoever from the station would post their name on it.

And finally, if someone from Star posted that, they would make sure the venue name is correct. It's "Dave & Busters" not "Dave 'N Busters."

CANCELED - Battle of the Bands 11/8/09 (Dave N' Busters)

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause anyone and especially the bands. There seems to have been too much trash talking between what appears to be 2 bands that are in the next round of the battle this Sunday. There are also rumors of backdoor deals implying the competition is being rigged somehow. We regret to inform you that since we want to avoid incident with our gracious host Dave N' Busters and to avoid any further slanderous comments of our station and our representatives we are canceling the battle today. Reps from the station will contact bands individually later in the week to reschedule and reconfigure this particular round in the battle.

Aside from what we will be discussing with the bands later this week we offer this bit of advice publicly. Try to make notice of our events in a more positive manner. The more you trash talk the more adversely it will effect your band's reputation. We want to award the band that deserves to win. If a band wants to play dirty and try to sway our judges outside the realm of the battle, and continuously downplay their competitors then we have no choice but to see it as unsportsmanlike behavior. It will not be tolerated any further.

Please check the the STAR 101.9FM site Monday and we will have an updated account and more information on when, where, and how this next round in the battle will take place.

Don't forget to tune in for the Afternoon Drive from 3pm to 7pm and make sure you hear the "Catch of the Day" at 5pm. Thank you to all of our sponsors for your support and your understanding concerning our rush decision to cancel. We will make it up to you.

I am recent transplant from Portland, OR (age 35) but have been working professionally singing at bars and venues, and am now doing the same here on Oahu. I mostly perform the music of Frank Sanatra, Dean Martin, Harry Connick, Michael Buble, stuff like that. Its something different that a lot of people really enjoy hearing. I'm not looking to make a full time living, but some part time fun. I have an offer for a weekly gig, and some other possible dates. I need a skilled, outgoing player to accompany me who is comfortable with that style of crooner/jazz music and have some fun while doing so. If you would like to audition, please email me back and we can see if it’s a good fit. Thanks for your time, Aloha

Aloha,
Senior guitar player wants to play music again. My former group included a vibe player, a bass player, a rhythm guitar (lead singer), a lead/rhythm guitar(me),
and an occasional steel guitar player. Unfortunately, three players in the group have passed away. I miss them and their music. I am looking to join or form a group (male or female) on the Windward side. I love playing any hawaian, hapa, contemporary, latin lite jazz, old standards, motown, originals and instrumentals. Like to sing harmony. I am not a professional, but I took a crash course in guitar music theory some years ago. I forgot some stuff! Too much to remember!! My name is Dave. Please contact me through this post. Below are some songs other than hawaiian that I enjoy playing. Willing to learn new music.

Adventures In Paradise , Meditation
Begin The Beguine , On a Clear Day
We are looking for someone who sings with a similar sound to Maynard, Cornell, or Reznor, or in such a manner as to fit the style of music. Not interested in screamers, blues singers, classic rock style, or the high pitched indy or pop sound. Vocals must be able to not only fit the music, but convey the same heavy mood that the music does.
Would be helpful if vocalist also has a PA system, though it isn't required. Reliable transportation is.
Gender is irrelevant, but prefer 21+, as all members are between 22-30. Drugs are not allowed, and yes, pot is a drug. Drinkers are ok, in temperance.
Still hashing out when and where we'll be meeting for regular practices, will be based on when everybody is free.

Hey Matt & Sean
Now that you guys have kissed and made up, yuck...
.......I do have to agree with a few topics that you brought up.

When a friend of mine sugggested to catch some live music at Jazz Minds, we were hit with an $8 cover, and to top it off, the band was just awful. I can't even remember their name, something valley? whatever. I even got pissed off at my friend. I told him that there were other live music venues that we could get in with no cover, and depending on who's playing that night, it could be great. Even if the band wasn't good, at least we can get in free.

As for the 808 SceneZine, I realize that they have a limited staff and are doing it for love, or very little $$$, but...and it's a BIG BUT...if you're in it, than you've got to cover it....simply put.....you automatically assumed the responsibility, by default. You've been doing it for a couple of years, yeah?, so no excuses....why don't you do this......stop covering the same punk/metal,emo-screamo rock bands, shows and related stuff for, lets say 6 months.....now you'll have the time to devote to covering traditional hawaiian music, jazz, contemporary, blues, country, symphony, or whatever other genres that you've left out over the years.....you can even rotate genres every couple of months.....that way, people would have no reason to bash your music publication because you are giving equal time to all genres.

Lastly, we can agree to disagree, its our human nature, however.....lets all show some class and dignity in our postings and leave out the profanity and vulgar language. Us musicians already have to live down a bad reputation, like, chronic, alcoholic or recovering, cheap, broke, and on and on, without adding to it. What's the world gonna think when checking out our music section. It's really been shameful, especially these last two weeks, and I, for one am ashamed of it all. Go ahead and debate, if you will, but, lets keep it clean.

I'm not a hater.....no profanity here. I just felt compelled to elaborate on these topics. Mature responses or replies are welcome.

Pau Hana Blues Band @ On Stage Drinks and Grinds (Hammerin' Hank.)

Aloha:

First, let me give a GIANT mahalo to Dave Young, proprietor of On Stage Drinks & Grinds in Kapahulu for all the kindness, generosity and goodwill he has shown me and others fortunate enough to have the pleasure of playing on his stage. I owe you much, Dave. Thank you.

I owe Mark "Wildcat" Coleman a debt of gratitude as well, as he was the first musician on this island who gave me a chance to get up on stage with him when he and Mo, now of Chinatown Highjack, played there as "The Whaley Boys".

As the drummer for the Pau Hana Blues Band, I feel compelled to comment regarding some of the things said regarding it here lately.

I can only speak for myself, but I believe Mark would agree with me that the musical goal of Pau Hana Blues is simply to play fun and enjoyable music, share it with others and include others in the process and possibly meet new players and friends. I think we hit our mark every time we play, and for that I consider the Pau Hana Blues Band a success. Are we the best blues band? No. Do we have fun and give other musicians, better and worse, an opportunity to show off their talents and do some networking? Absolutely YES!

I suspect that when a good number of musicians show up to play there, there is some networking going on. This makes me happy, to know that connections are being made and new bands form from it. It gives me immense satisfaction to know that I, in some small way, facilitate this connectivity between musicians. It's just one way of many of supporting the music here on Oahu. Again, I thank Dave Young and Mark Coleman for allowing me the opportunity to serve the music community in this way.

The current line up for Pau Hana Blues is "Wildcat" on vocals and bass; me, Aaron "Hammerin' Hank" Henry, on drums; and Scottie "Pedro" on guitar. Scott will be the first to admit he is not a "blues" guitarist, and at one time, several months ago, he graciously refused our offer to play with us because of this. Scott is more of a rock guitarist, but he has been a very good blues rhythm guitarist for us, and more and more he hits the mark with his leads, too. The thing I like most about Scott, other than his good nature, is that he keeps his guitar in tune. Kevin "MojoKane" Coleman rounds us out most weeks with harp and vocals on select songs.

I would consider myself fortunate if I could recall all the names and faces of all the players that have been on stage with the PHB band. Unfortunately I can not recall them all, but here's some notable players that have been featured with the PHB band on Monday nights. My apologies to any I may have forgot or names I could not remember or if I associate you incorrectly with different bands. Good and bad qualities will be attributed, so take it like a man — or a woman, if that's what you are — and know it's not disrespect that I mean, but honest constructive criticism. Enjoy the praise too!

Ryan of "Burnin' Blue": Quiet, serious, attentive, good player with a kind heart, never heard him say a bad thing about another player.

Rick of ? with the rising sun painted on your guitar case: Man, you are the BOMB! Confident and commanding — authentic blues man. Come back any time!

Mike the sound guy of what band are you in?: Mike, I think you play well and have a nice clean sound and I would always be happy to share the stage with you. Above all I appreciate your honest opinions and constructive criticisms regarding both Pau Hana and Stratus Blue. When you speak, I listen.

Big Time Ray of "Burnin' Blue": Solid Bass player, no complaints, except maybe smile more. :) Think of Ernie from FOA and his "perma-grin"!

FOA, specifically to Ernie and Clay who joined the PHBB one night in August: Sorry I wasn't there as I was on the mainland that month. These guys are the "real deal", incredibly nice and play well with others. It would be a thrill and honor to have been on stage with you hep cats. Please come back some Monday night WHEN I'M THERE! Thanks.

Cello Joe: You played with us once and I loved it! You amazed me with your "hepness" and versatility.

Cello Joe's wife, Erika, on harp: Hey, she's pleasant to look at and a pretty good harp player too; always brings it home and never without a smile. How can you not like that?

The "Shimme Shimme Shake" singers: Three classy and lovely ladies singing three part harmonies all while doing the shimme shimme shake. Can you say, "Shawing"?

The lady singer from "Tell Mama". I should know your name by now. WOW! You could be Bonnie Raitt's sister. It's an honor and privilege to back you up. Are you single?

Louis "the Fish": harp player extraordinaire, usually hangs with Rick the Bomb. Authentic blues man.

Chris, formerly of "Crooked Halo": I love this cat! He's got spirit and dedication and brings a unique style to the vocals. Quite possibly the reincarnation of John Belushi without the coke!? Thanks for showing as often as you do.

Jimmy Bones, formerly of "Crooked Halo": You got up once that I recall and played, don't remember too much, but you were solid. Thanks for your support! I appreciate your cool headed tone when posting too. You keep it "matter of factly". Thanks.

Elika (hope I spelled it right): Shameless dancer and Hawaiian blues guitarist. You showed me a whole new door with the way you played....Nice! Thanks for your aloha.

Gene, the drummer from "Tell Mama": Nice guy, good player, good dynamics, nice closed roll and your meter was very steady. Any one from "Tell Mama" is alright with me.

Michael, the bass player from "Loud Milk": Respectable gentleman, dignified and confident. Keeps it at home with an occasional flare. A fine player. Always a pleasure to have you on stage.

Chuck, the sax player from "Stratus Blue". What can I say, the world needs more people like Chuck and so does the stage. He fits in nicely in almost any jam and reads other players well and knows when to lay back - all around great guy.

"Mad Dog" Brendan: He's the guitarist who saved our ass one night when the scheduled guitarist failed to show. He ran home, grabbed his ax and played the night with us -- all first take for him. It was awesome, and we are eternally grateful.

Art Stockwell of "Stratus Blue": A most unconventional player. That's what I like about him. He sounds like Art Stockwell and not Jimi Hendrix. ALWAYS IN KEY no matter how unusual his progressions are. He'll tell you it's purely a matter of physics. I believe him.

Seanster the Monster: Sean is a pretty good guitarist for his age and not a bad singer either. We learned and played some really cool songs with him. Sean's got raw talent and a lot of ambition. It's little wonder he left for greener pastures. I wish him all the best. You're always welcome to "share the stage" with PHBB anytime, Sean.

Kipp of "Chinatown Highjack": Good vocalist and solid rhythm player. Dedicated, motivated and focused. All around great guy. Check out his solo act at Planet Hollywood some night.

Todd the drummer: Obviously a rock drummer, but with some cool chops. Good attitude, solid beat. I'm more than happy to share the drumming with this guy when he shows.

Lori Coleman of "Hot City Blues Band": What a gem! Classy! Great voice. You are missed.

Chris Vandercook: Authentic local bluesman with roots in Chicago (plays every Friday at Mulvadi Cafe in Kaimuki). Excellent singer and sterling guitar work. Dude!

Mr. Ernie Cruz: Local legend country western guitarist and vocalist. I never knew I liked country as much 'till I played drums for you.

To all those that I just can't seem to recall or got your name wrong, you have my sincere apologies and and my invite to come make your presence known again at Dave Youngs On Stage Drinks & Grinds every Monday night, 6 to 9pm with the Pau Hana Blues Band.

Thank you and good day.

Hey there.

We are Great White Shark.

We are a touring Canadian Ska, Reggae, Surf Rock Band.

We are playing a 10 tour of the Hawaiian islands, and have picked up a date at Breakers on the North Shore.

We are looking for an opening act that can split the bill with us. (We will split the door with you in turn)

We require that you be able to share your drum kit, bass amp, and guitar amp with a 4 piece group of respectfull musicians.

Finally the Venue is without a permanent PA - If you are aware of someone with backline sufficient, or can provide it yourself its a bonus.

The show is right smack in the Middle of Triple Crown time, and the place will be crawling. We have good draw, and we want to work with someone local who has good draw as well.

Lets put together a great show!

If you fit the bill please contact us at

Wtf I haven't even said anything in like...5 Days, you guys just keep going with this shit. I think it's very hilarious and somewhat flattering that people take what I say and take it over the line for so long lol. But seriously enough is enough. For the record, when I said "Big Dogs" I ment all the bands in the scene that are actually worth a crap that have been around for more than a year. And yes the following list is of MY opinion. I've seen every one of these listed bands live and know they can draw a crowd, put on a great show, and when they aren't on stage, they are very friendly and easy going. Now I'll probably miss a few bands but you get the idea. Cause lets be honest, any jackass can put together a band, write a few songs, play a few covers, get their friends to show up and watch them even though they suck. Likewise there could be a really good band that just plays one or two shows, is really good and has potential, but just drops out of the game for whatever reason. When I say Big Dogs, I mean the people who are out there every day working for their band and for their dream. Perhaps we should name them the UnderDogs, would that make the Craigslisters egos feel a little bit better? ;)

Busekruz
Affront the Weak
Dawn of the Onslaught
All heart
Pual'i
Twenty Twenty
8250
Disaster Kit
Stillborn Skies
All Natro
Sheriff Brown
Ill Valley
Corrupt Absolute
And yes Phoenix Rose

Feel free to add and subtract. (Cause I don't give a fuck! :D )

And also for the record, Phoenix Rose doesn't hold any of this shit responsible to the bands. We realize that this must be just a few people (most likely fans) with nothing better to do when bands aren't playing shows lol. Until then PR continues to push on and we welcome anyone that wants to step up and talk to us personally.

you flagged me but that's okay, I'm back and in your face per request.

So what's the plan for Sunday? Gonna play all Killswitch Engaged songs again and claim to be an original band. (now before you babies...I mean Big Dogs get all excited...yes, every band plays covers, brilliant point. But only fraudulent scum like you Big Dogs, play other peoples songs and claim they are your own. Just because it's not Stones ro Beatles you think you can get a way with it). Whatcha gonna say when you sit down with that big important AR rep in LA, unlike your following of 15 people (I mean members of other bands hoping to get into a show with you), he/she will know the difference.

Next time, let's talk more about $$$ and your threats!

Wow you guys are awesome. Yes, spin around and lick your guitars, I need more baby more! That's Big Dog talent!
It always about Eddie 8, or Busekus, or others at the top of the heep (ur friends and roomates).
Had unexcited looks on his face - thought he was pretentious but found him very calm and charming after sitting with him. Don't know what degree he's capable of, still, he made it look easy. The poster saying "decent" chops was either scott, the guitarist there, or this other regular, bald white guy, don't care what his name is. Sean even let him use his guitar, he, U are the poser. That night was my first pauhana monday, went almost every monday after but stopped entirely months ago; never bothered with the bar. Always overheard Sean refusing to sing the rolling stones songs. Supremely talented, but to nice, and when you are that young and well put together, everybody wants a piece of you and everybody wants to be you. Scott, who's also nice, or the loser regular wasn't insulting him, just insecure enough to not give credit where credit is due. He was interesting and inspirational. friends of adam don't belong in the same room. poor kid, just get out of here already!!
I mean, I definitely appreciate it. Thank you "warriors" poster. But no need to fill up craigslist with The 808 Scene Zine is good, The 808 Scene Zine is bad posts. That's already happened and I personally don't want to rehash it. If you guys got advice or constructive criticism, I'd love to see it directly. If you want to ask the opinion of other people in the scene about what they think, cool.
Kay, I'm out. Thanks for re-inspiring me to reach out to new writers again. We've got a couple potential new contributors!

right, so first to respond to the person who responded to me about reggae:

a good point you brought up is that some people are fake hawaiins and think reggae will make them fit in when all these fakers really want to do is not get hassled and so in turn they hassle haole in the name of hawaii. these people are obviously asshole thugs who are not only bringing the whole vibe of the island down but they are giving the true hawaiian people a bad name. there are posers in every scene.

a bad point you made is that reggae is easy to play.
its actually really hard to play correctly. the problem is there is just soooo much bad reggae out there its easily forgotten that it can sound amazing when played right.
at its finest reggae rivals any other style of music played well like jazz, classical, folk, blues or rock.

and this brings me to my next point:

ive been seeing that the 808scenezine has been getting some heat lately. not really sure why. one of the comments mentioned that they dont cover higher forms of music like jazz etc...have you never heard bad jazz? i sure have. ive heard jazz people told me i was supposed to like because they played like this or that and while i knew they were good players i just didnt like the sound they were making. all music is this way. so to say all jazz is good is just as ignorant as saying all reggae is bad.

im not a part of the zine but ive been checking it out for a while and although not everything they print interests me i still like the idea that there's a grass roots entertainment zine out there keeping people informed. could they improve? sure but so could you and so could i.

on the positive tip the fact you are complaining about it means you know it exists and no publicity is bad publicity ive been told.
but instead of talking trash about it why dont you open your microsoft word at school or your mom's house, write an article about what you think is important and then submit it to them. or why dont you take your friends demo or your demo and send it to the for review or seek them out at a show and say hi.

introduce yourself. a little aloha goes a long way.

also, to the chick from the zine...you made a comment that kids in punk bands are borrowing from bigger groups they like and although they arent the most original sounding bands they have a following and some kind of subculture...i know that wasnt your exact quote but im too lazy to cut and paste right now.

in response to that: every form of music no matter how "sophisticated" has borrowed from other people in their form as well as outside of their form, miles davis and duke ellington liked classical, bob marley liked punk rock and country, and ramones liked the who and motown.

so lets not confuse "being influenced by" with staight up copy-catting.
there are bands and songwriters on oahu without an original bone in their bodies and they play all types of music.
then there are kids with rough talent who because they are just starting out still sound a little too much like the bands they love to listen to.

like i said up top, i think its awesome you make the zine and although it could improve, you seem to also be aware of that and are calling out to the scene and even your critics for input and assistance to make it better, therefore you dont deserve to be getting the heat from a bunch of jealous haters who would rather stand on the outside and critisize than get involved. this comes from their own insecurity about the music or art theyre making. you just keep doing what your doing. its a much needed magazine because you give coverage to people just starting out and allow them to get a little press. but dont sell yourself short, cover some jazz, cover some hip hop, cover some punk, cover some metal, cover some hawaiian. as long as the bands are genuine it doesnt matter how "sophisticated" they are or not. there are always gonna be haters.

and for all you clicky scenesters and bands, come down off your high horses and realize you arent the only game in town.
be cool to the kids coming up. its only from you that they'll learn.

like i said: a little aloha goes a long way.

peace-
"there's quite a responsibility in such mags, since it represents to people who don't spend a lot of time digging themselves, what happens in music on Oahu.
I for one am sick and tired of childish "hip hop" bands. And thrasher and emo bands. 808scenezine is written for its readers, amateur scene hipsters and bands, so if you start covering real music and musicians in jazz and classic hawaiian for example here in Hawaii, it may get a little too sophisticated. Hawaii has so many world-class players, so I commend the people who want to hear more about it at the street level. It's a conundrum, but just keep that in mind ;)"

sophistication... (Oahu)

one should be very careful when using the word sophistication in music, people get touchy. While I agree with the guy who used it, purposes of music styles vary. When you say that some play to create a subculture or scene, it's like saying that you choose to continue to preach to the choir. In that sense, you're deviating from the art form and it becomes superficial. Like letting your clothes and friends do your playing. That's why people begin to lose respect for say, emo bands, or hip hop bands, who have "scenes" (another word that should not be used in music). Like a chewable candy-coated vitamin. I understand why people rag on textures like jazz, classical, hawaiian classical, harp steel, chamber etc. It's cause they don't get it, and it can be boring to kids who just want noise and aggression. I used to hate jazz before I could hear it. Yes, punk and rock has its amazing potential, it takes a certain ability to exploit it, and I think people are saying that said bands and styles aren't cutting it. It's a simple fact, jazz, and classical, and hawaiian classical musicians to name a few are far more accomplished and are light years beyond the ordinary musical capacities of those who choose to stay, or are relegated to remain in most cases, in punk and rock. There's a progression in music, I've experienced it myself, listening to punk, then blues, then rocknroll, then country, ragtime, bebop, modal jazz, classical...each step grew more and more musically, and intellectually, demanding. For instance, a perfect example, since I've been seeing his name here a lot, is Jimi Hendrix, a genius, he continually got better and better, moving from blues, to pop, to funk, to psychedelia, to jazz rock - and he would have continued to amass his talent had it not been cut short. Naturally, his mind swung towards music the art form, and not music the "scene." Not saying everybody has to be Jimi, I'm just using him as an example of musical progression and not virtuosity. His clothes and costumes were meant to complete his persona and to entertain, to juxtapose his sound and his soul - not to look cool and fit in with others and represent a scene. One more thing, wasn't there a Deadbeats band a year or two ago? Different from the current Deadbeats? Maybe they're getting confused cause the current Deadbeats are good, not great, but not bad at all. I am another who doesn't like the way hip hop is delivered these days. Amateurish...no, childish...yes. I used to love hip hop, Doug E Fresh, Public Enemy, Run DMC, NWA, De la Soul, Del Fuega, Sugar Hill...what happened?
"Sophisticated" is not a good word to use in music, not really good to use ever. to brash, to geeky. And "virtuoso" is a word invented to label people with technique that most will never be capable of.

and a wider view of the music scene.

This is not Katie writing, but I am a fan of the 808-scene zine and I feel that her point needs to be reiterated. I think you guys missed the notation made by Katie (which is undeniably true) that Shawn, katie's husband, has NEVER had his music featured in the Zine. So whoever made the comment about the "same hipster bands" being featured, and whoever followed up with the claim that maybe Shawn gets "more positive coverage" in the Zine do not have their facts straight. Also, the Deadbeats have only been featured once. I'm not sure about 3SM (supersonic space monkeys), but Blane contacts Katie about featuring his music in the zine. AGAIN, as Katie says, please submit your stories, music info and it WILL be covered. If you are complaining about the coverage in the Zine, its painfully obvious to the rest of us that this is happening because you haven't submitted your music, your show or your scene to the Zine. Its a lot of work for one person to try and discover every new band and to give equal reporting on all underground scenes. I agree that the Zine probably covers more of the hardcore/punk/emo/hip-hop genres of the underground music scene, but that's not because she favors them. Trust me. Its because those are the ones who invite her out to shows, who request that she help out with promotion, who submit their music for Shawn to review. She is PLEADING to ALL the different underground music scenes to write, submit, request, whatever, because her goal is to be as comprehensive as possible in her coverage. She is the sweetest young lady I've ever met and trust me, more than anything else, she wants to contribute to local underground music. She is most definitely not out to self-promote herself or her husband shawn. The facts speak for themselves. Do do yourself and do her a favor and let her know whats going on in your niche of the scene. Or better yet, write your own article and submit it to her. Its free fucking press for shit's sake.

I got a message from Jason (Stillborn Skies) that "I suck according to craigslist" on facebook haha. I had no idea so many (2 or 3) random anonymous people knew who I was! The dialogue about my music being covered in the Zine has only made me realize...Why the hell have I not been covered as a musician in the Zine? I guess Katie is right...I have not performed much or tried to push my CD at all lately, but still, to be doing this for more than three years without even a mention of my album in any of the Zine's seems a little stupid. Anyway, thanks for the craiglist fame...I do feel kind of special. Oh, and I am playing at Kaliedoscope @ 39 Hotel on Tuesday. I should dust off my guitar. Rusty strings don't sound good.

Interesting. The last post in response to my initial posts about the Zine called hip hop and the other music covered in the zine "childish" and "amateur." I respect your opinion, but I wholeheartedly disagree with you. While you may feel like classical Hawaiian or jazz are higher art forms or for more sophisticated audiences, I really just think it's a matter of taste. I see a huge diversity of quality music here. Some of the bands are doing really creative things with their music. A lot of practice and work goes into their performances and songwriting. Many spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to play and organize gigs and get their music to the mainland with limited resources. Many are working to create the best recordings and albums they are able and many are just looking to put on a good show for their friends.

People might feel like punk or hardcore are lesser forms of music (and I pick these because they have a lot of younger fans and band members), but really, the kids in these bands are learning how to be writers, musicians, and performers; they are bringing friends and people together and creating a subculture around what they do. They might be copying sounds they hear in other bands or they might be creating their own versions of their respective styles, but it's all a part of the learning process. There are a lot of already great musicians and people who will become great musicians in these groups.

There is a lot to be learned from all styles of music, and particularly ones like classical Hawaiian or jazz, because the performers who play this music work to become real experts in their instrument and style of music. That is something to strive for, for sure. Other people might feel that creating an overall feeling or culture around what they are doing is more important than being virtuosos.

I don't feel like the people reading or in the zine are only hipsters and amateurs. I think they dig live music, hopefully they want to support it, and they see that people are trying to create something in a sort of difficult environment for the various styles of music we cover. A lot of love goes into this scene (though you might be hard pressed to tell from all these recent posts). I respect it and I'm usually very impressed by it. Guess that's why it makes me a good person to run a zine about local music.

I whole heartily respect the family thing, she puts so much effort into the zine, katie and her husband do not deserve that kind of criticism. I think it's very cool that Shawn is included, I hope people understand that that's not the issue, coverage just needs to be mixed up a little better - or at least quit featuring such horrible bands..."Super Sonic Space Monkeys and Deadbeats..."
Katie, with all due respect, there's quite a responsibility in such mags, since it represents to people who don't spend a lot of time digging themselves, what happens in music on Oahu.
It's a conundrum, but just keep that in mind ;)

But you see, it really doesn't matter, from my experience.....
This is coming from Katie, editor of the zine.. Not really standing for the Zine here. I just want to address a comment I've seen multiple times through multiple craigslist battles over the years and it puzzles me. I'm not gonna comment on all the bs going on about all the different bands right now. I'll leave it to you all to have fun with it.

I did see this comment: "but everytime I pick the thing up, I see the same shitty bands and people/performer/hipsters, like Shawn Davenport and Super Sonic Space Monkeys and Deadbeats for example"

As you can see, it's prompted me to try again to call to writers who know about more scenes than the ones I'm most familiar with to contribute. So I'm trying to address this issue in that way.

As far as those specific bands mentioned, I have to say, I was pretty psyched when I finally got around to interviewing the Deadbeats because it was way past due. I even had to cancel on them a couple times because I got the flu. Blane's been in more often because of The Spot and promotions stuff like that.

This is the puzzling one - As for Shawn, he's only ever been talked about as a musician... well, I'd have to look back, but I don't think ever, except mentioned in passing because he had a song on a CD or played in a show or something. He's certainly never been featured as a musician. In like issue #7, he wrote about his tattoos. The reason you see his name over and over again is because he's one of the freaking writers!!! Yes. That is why Shawn Davenport is consistently in the zine. He's the one writing your all's CD reviews and helping distribute the zine every month.

On a different subject: Here's a hint. We usually end up working with the people and bands that take the time and effort to contact us. Really, all you gotta do is ask and we'll find some way to include you in the publication - printed or online (we do only have 16 pages). So when writing the zine, I end up working with the people that talk to me. Please don't be discouraged if you send me something and I don't get back right away. I request and suggest that you bother me and remind me about it. I can be forgetful and distracted with the responsibilities I've taken on. If I don't get back to you, it's not malicious in any way!

I honestly want the zine to be better and more "satisfying" to people out there. If you think you know a way, I'm all ears.
