My personal experience with Han Shi Yi Quan
By Glenn Pasion
When I first started training with master Han in china, I wanted to be one of the greatest martial artists in the world. I was very skeptical and asked him to prove that this art is real. He proceeded by tapping my chest with his fingers, and each time he touched me it felt as if my body got electrocuted. My nervous system went into shock, I flew back and I could not react. His lesson was you must be in this moment of void, and not allow the mind to have power over our actions. Mind only exists in the past and in the future and often deludes the present moment. This is an art of understanding oneself and our true nature.
I like many people have heard and read of this before from spiritualists, healers, martial artists, yogis, religions, philosophers, etc. But there was something different. They spoke of this but quite often did not have a way of testing if we can truly be in this moment or if we are using our minds to resolve this dilemma. How do we truly understand ourselves and nature? How do we know if we are in this moment or if we are creating an illusionary present, from a past experience? I understood that the only constant is change and that if we stay in our past experiences and judgments, we cannot move with this changing present moment. It is interesting how this concept of void is so important. Master Han uses this understanding to help unlock the mysteries of healing, science, spiritualists, philosophers, with the use of martial arts.
My other teacher Hide Mitsuoka, from Japan who introduced me to master Han, began teaching Han Shi Yi Quan. 7-8 years ago. And in a matter of a few years his school has grown to 400 people. Students of all interests train and meet him, medical doctors, alternative medicine and spiritual healers, professors, philosophers, famous sports players, quantum physicists, and of course martial artists. He said in today’s society, many people are looking for something different, something more real. People are beginning to instinctively see something unnatural with what society has become.
I no longer have the desire to become the greatest martial artist in the world. I do find that understanding myself is much more fun. Master Han is a very unique teacher. He always pushes us to ask questions, to ourselves and to himself. This is how we understand and experience what is real.

A brief history of Han Shi Yi Quan

Yi Quan began with Master Wang Jiang Zhai. Master Wang is known as being one of the most famous and influential martial artist t of the 20th century. His sole purpose was to stop secrecy in training and to find what was real. His main practice was ZhanZhuang or standing chikung/meditation. Today many martial artist, spiritualist, healers, practice ZhanZhuang because of master Wangs efforts.
He started his life as a very sickly child, and began practicing Hsing Yi Chuan under his uncle, grandmaster Guo Yun Shin. At the age of 13 grand masters Guo proclaimed Wang as the one who understood his teachings and the lineage holder of Hsing Yi Quan. Master Wang realized that the forms limited the potential and kept one trapped in his mind. After practicing and searching through other martial arts master Wang came to the conclusion that the essence of the movements and being in this moment and finding our true nature was most essential and created Yi Quan.
Of all of master Wang’s students only four truly understood what he was speaking of. Master Han Xing Qiao was the top of these four students and taught master Wang’s classes for him. M aster Wang freely invited exchange of fists after being able to defeat his four but alas no one ever did. During the Cultural Revolution, due to master Han being a doctor of Chinese medicine, and holding a reputation of having one of the most famous unique style of tui na in china, and also teaching martial arts had to flee and hid out in central china. He was never heard of again and master Wang did not know if he was alive or not.
In 1985 the Hong Kong Yi Quan association found Master Han and brought him and his family to the city of Zhu Hai at the border of Hong Kong and Macau. Prior to master Hans passing in 2004 he spoke to his son master Han Chen Jing and said that it is unfortunate that this beautiful art may disappear and wished to his son to teach the art with no secrets, and to not let the art fade away. Master Han Jr. changed the name to Han Shi Yi Quan to differentiate this art from the Yi Quan that is being spread today.
