For all of the contestants of the showdown, my hats off to you. The entire comptetition was well planned, and executed. The judges did an amazing job, and had a difficult task in picking the best to represent Hawaii in California!!
The Crew with 97.5KHCM was professional and worked hard to put on a good show for the crowd that night.
Every time there is a competition like this, there will always be only one winner. There will always be people crying about the results, and there will always be people complaining about how it was rigged.
Nine different judges were there, and all of them were the best representatives for marketing country music on this island. One of them I beleive played a big role in getting Sugarland famous. They picked the winners for the last two years, and both of those winners won in California as well. Oh my gosh! There must have been conspiracies there too!!
ANTHONY and the Wranglers were by far the most energetic and fun act that performed that night. Every contestant had the opportunity to have a band of their own, but chose not to. The winner of the National level last year was....A BAND!! "Nash Street" I think it was.
Whoever is hating on the results are just making themselves sound like cry-babies who did not get their way. Just be happy for the people who placed or be quiet!
Anthony and his band worked extremely hard to get where they are now. I am sure the Navy will let him go for one weekend to represent Hawaii in California, and I know he will make it possible for his band to go as well.

Currently seeking band with original material (NO COVER BANDS). Genre's considered are: progressive, rock, metal, experimental. Other genre's welcomed I just ask to hear some material first before anything.

Current drumming influences: TOOL, Opeth (w/Martin Lopez), Lamb of God, Mastodon, Dream Theater. While I can make no claim to sound exactly like them, those bands listed should give a good feel of what I currently sound like. I do also have a vast library of music (including other genre's that I haven't listed) that I listen to and on occasion use for inspiration.

Available to practice at least once a week (ideally Friday's). I have my own gear. I'm 32 years old and I have no time for kiddie high school drama's.

And I agree that it should either be all backing tracks or all live band not both. And it also seemed like he and his band already knew all the judges and that there was more there than meets the eye.

Besides unless he can get leave from the US Navy and if travel was not part of the prize they will NOT be able to rep Hawaii in Cali anyway.

My name is Brittany and I work for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I will be putting on event in Kona on September 24th. It's called a Lock Up. I need entertainment, someone who can play a guitar and sing local hawaiian/reggae, we don't have too much room for a whole band this year. We are a non-profit so this is not a paid gig, although a tax receipt can be given.

A Lock Up is a social event where we "arrest" citizens and give them a bail amount that they have to raise in order to be set free. This year the "jail" is Outback Steakhouse. Food and drinks will be provided for you at no charge. You would be playing for all of the jailbirds as they participate by getting their mugshots taken, see the judge, and network while eating lunch and raising bail.

Your name would be mentioned to every single person we call to invite - over 2,000, and be mentioned in every correspondence with the jailbirds (email and phone conversations). You will be placed in every PSA we send out. Last you will be highlighted in the Kona Lock Up Newsletter.

In an unbelievable turn of wierd events, the super rock group "Screeming Weener" has broken music, sources said Tuesday.

"The super group Screeming Weener has broken music with their unbelievable jams and licks," officials said Tuesday. "They rocked it right into overload. We're pretty sure we'll have music up and playing again within the week, but for now all music, and playing music is on hold in, and around the gigantic world."

Officials confirmed the rarity, a "once in history" stop of music and jamming due to an overload of harmonic frequencies that resonate perfectly to cancel out peoples' ears, and musicians' instruments. Officials say it has always been rumored to be possible, and tested in the lab, but they've never seen it actually happen publicly.

"It's always been possible, we've tested it in the lab, but it's never happened publicly til now."

Rob P., Bassist for the Screeming Weener, and head Astro-Biologist for the band commented on what the scientific community is calling "The Great Silence."

"We didn't mean it...Gavin (lead guitar player), just got a new foot switch and nasty distortion, and apparently that - in combination with Kevin T's kick-ass, on-time vocals, and super rythym - triggered a 3.14 jiggawatt flux capacitor plasma charge in the upper band, and as everyone knows, you just can't have a 3.14 jiggawatt charge in the upper band man!"

When asked if he thought it was his fault, Gavin made it perfectly clear he was taking it seriously, but felt no remorse for people who have to go the whole week without music, because it's....broken. "It's broken man! Deal with it! I can't POSSIBLY know what my killer ripping leads are going to do to the overall fabric of space-time, and music! Let alone people's ears! I'm going to keep playing until my head explodes, and however many times we break music...well, that's up to the gods. The music gods. I rock my whole area. In and around the region of my guitar, I rock. That is all."

When asked about his take on the whole giant controversy, Keven T, lead singer, and condom tester for the band had only this to say:

"F-U. We rock. We broke music for the first time on the whole globe, and we'd do it again. Long live rock."

The ironic part to this whole thread is that the winners of the Colgate Country Showdown whoever they would have been are not allowed any rhythm track accompaniment at the next level of competition in Napa Valley. A band is provided for the people who do not have one, so why not send a group who has been playing country music together for almost two years. The group cohesiveness is enough, in my opinion to represent Hawaii.

I was there as well last night, and I personally couldn't make a solid choice, I thought every one of the acts was great. No. I'm not one to random gripe about anything. Constructive criticism here.

First, I don't think that the Wranglers, however good, should've been judged as a band. All thing's should've been equal, either all live or all backing tracks with an instrument solo at best. To keep things equal, I tried to listen to the contestants with a live band as if they were solo with tracks and the contestents with tracks as if they were live. Secondly, a few of the backing tracks hid the contestant's vocals too well to judge purely. Take out the harmonies and listen only to the singer's voice. Third, the local styles had no business in a country genre contest (let alone placing 3rd). That means none of the local girl singers. The A capella singer was talented, but definitely not "country". I define country as somewhere between southern rock and nashville. There are other crossovers but these are distinct examples.

Here's my top three.

Toss up between lst and second.

Andy Marks had a classic country voice with smooth delivery, similar to Doug Stone with a bit of soft Randy Travis thrown in. Give him a live band and the voice will be there.

The singer-songwriter girl in the red halter top did a great job with the freedom song. Again. Classic country. I think her name was Anjii Lee.

Here's a weak third because he was better than the rest in some ways, some not.
The guy that took second place, forgot his name.

My criteria?
From Ray Price to Willie Nelson to Doug Stone, Vince Gill, Randy Travis, and, of course, George Strait . . . from Loretta Lynn to Tammy Wynette to Dolly Parton -- would these contestants fit in with "country" music?

Working band needs a bassist who can do fast melodic walkin bass lines. And who sincerely loves the rock/blues of the 60's and 70's.
Included in our set are ole time blues greats, as well as the next generation influenced by them. We pay tribute by playing all types. Some bass lines are super hard, and our former bassist considered them too difficult to tackle. Please, reply if you can do this easily. It's an essential part of alot of the material we've chosen to play. Robben Fords Tribute To Paul Butterfield CD " Work Song " is a prime example. If you can do the bass lines, I can do the harp parts. getting the rest of the band to "get it" is next. We have capable and able players waiting for the right bassist.
Whats the point unless your having fun, too?
Being passionate about the music of that era is essential. Or the band will fail in getting the soul out of the music we are covering...it's that simple.

Lotus Soundbar & The 808 Scene Zine presents RIVALS - a musical battle (looking for bands)

Lotus Soundbar is beginning a brand new series of shows, called "Rivals" in which musical performers will battle it out on stage for a cash prize.

Rivals will be held on Wednesday nights and the kickoff set will be a battle of the bands. Over the first three weeks, up to 21 bands (7 per night) will compete to make it to the finals. The 4th night will be the final showdown with the winner take all - a $1000 cash prize & gifts.

With all this talk of rigged battles (ala the country showdown comments), we'd like to say that this is not rigged in any way, shape, or form. There will be three judges. One will be a public figure that will judge on overall stage performance (energy, interest, creativity in the show, etc), one will be a music expert, such as a known musician or music teacher (judging on musicianship), and the third judge will judge on crowd response.

Nothing like this has ever happened in any music scene before. These types of events are usually so fair and honest, it just breaks my heart to think that the judges already knew who was going to win before they even arrived at the event. Or even worse, that the entire event was likely put together just for the winning band/performer to promote themselves because they have a "friend" who does the bookings there.

I am so shocked.....

(This post was full of what is called "sarcasm". Im sure most people will pick up on that, but since the topic here is "country/western", I thought I would probably need to point it out.)

Aloha Tower Country Music Showdown - poor judging (Oahu)

My wife and I are spectators and country music fans, not involved with any of the contestants at country radio's 97.5 Country Music Showdown held at the Aloha Tower last night. We watched and listened to each performer and waited for the winning announcement, only to be dissapointed. I overheard many others in the audience around me express the same feelings.

While a wonderful production and courageous display of talent, the show lacked qualified and impartial judging. I sat nearby and watched judges laugh, joke, stuff themselves with free food and booze, and do email, while contestants poured thier hearts out in song. I should not have overheard some judges say to another "oh...I LIKE this song" because they should be judging the performance, not the cover song. Others clearly responded to the "crowd and local favorites". Is that impartial?

Though the contest was between individual performers (like professional elimination talent programs seen on television), judging was heavily swayed toward entrants that brought live bands to accompany them.

And, their were contestants that, though wonderfully talented, had material and presentations that sat solidly outside of the "American" country music genre. They had no business being in the contest in the first place.

For the contestants that should've taken first, second, and third place, congratulations and don't give up.

And, for station 97.5 and its general management, (I hope you hear about this comment) you don't need 10 or more mostly unqualified judges to do a song contest, you only need several highly qualified judges who are experienced in the music genre.

If a contestant is going to represent Hawaii in "country music", send the best.

I Want To Form A Band (Oahu)

I know this is going to be nearly impossible.. ,but, anyway...I am a guitarist and would like to form a band. I would prefer people who would like to write original music. My idea of a band is a singer, bassist, drummer, and a guitarist. I know some musicians like ten people in a band... but its just not me. This is just my opinion, but, when you have too many people everything becomes very diluted and convoluted. If I were to describe my style of playing I guess it would be somewhere in between U2(old), Collective Soul to Disturbed. lol. I am in my early 40's, so if that is an issue... then I am probably not your guy, but, I can assure you that I don't feel it or act it. I am not going to say what style of music I am looking to write, because, after each member contributes their input.. thats what we will be. And thats creativity. I don't want to write what "we think people will like". I want to write "what we like" and if it turns out that others like it as well... that is just icing on the cake. I moved here fairly recently, about a year ago now.
And since I've been here, I have good friends, all of which are already in bands.

I have been playing guitar for 2 years solid now.
I spend anywhere from 3-5 hours playing a day.
And lately I have been waking up at 1-4 in the morning to practice playing.

I have a decent singing voice, I match that of Spencer from Underoath and Matt Tuck of Bullet For My Valentine.

I can scream pretty consistently.

I am not desperate but I am friendly, open and, most of all, willing to learn.

Wanted: Female singers for local Chorus.

We are a new chorus, formed last year, called the Honolulu Blend Show Chorus and we sing in 4-part harmony a cappella style. Our range of music is varied: patriotic, contemporary, Hawaiian, jazz, barbershop and religious.

We offer 4 weeks of free vocal lessons from experienced coaches in this art form, in a group setting. You do not need to be able to read music, as we supply all the learning material.

We work hard and love the harmony and friendships that come with being in a wonderful chorus.

If you enjoy performing and singing, want to improve your vocal skills, can dedicate 7-9 pm Monday nights to rehearsals at the Fleet Reserve Assn. 891 Valkenburgh St off Nimitz by the airport, as well as some of the performance dates��..� this is for you!

Hello-

I am a guitar player as well as a bass player. I am currently on stage with the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Manoa Valley Theater.(Totally sold out!!) With THIS show I am the lead guitarist, but I am equally good (or bad, Ha!!) on my bass.
I have played on the road on the mainland US, Canada, Mexico, and the Virgin Islands. I play all styles but don't do much in the way of 'Jazz'. I can play jazz but I am not great at it. I had a classic rock band for about 7 years here on Oahu but that band finally split, as a primary member had to move away. So, I am looking for a permanent band to commit myself to.
I have great gear, (in-ear monitor system, or powered floor monitor set-up, 15" JBL EON G2 PA system, practice place, strobes, fogger) come prepared, can sing, good transport. I work a good steady job, also.
I am picky as to what I get involved with musically. I am not interested in a 'jam band'. I am looking for a decent paying situation that uses me about 4 times a month. Perhaps less, perhaps more.
I am looking to play with only one band, not a collection of casual gigging bands. ONE band.
