My foster family found me abandoned at a park. They are now trying to find me a loving home. They would really love to keep me because I am so sweet, cuddly and affectionate but they already have two cats and are unable to keep me. My foster family has had me spayed and I have had all my shots. (The vet says I am in great health now.)

A family dog attacks and kills a 2-month-old infant. Two others were injured in the attack.

Now, police and the Hawaiian Humane Society officals must decide what to do with the dangerous animal.

Lily Campbell describes the events leading up to the horrifying moment, when her grandson, 2-month-old Iokepa Liptak was attacked by one of the family dogs.

"My daughter just went to the kitchen to get a glass of water," Campbell said. "The dog was behind her. When she turned around, the dog wasn't there. When she rushed to the room, the dog was on the bed."

The dog, that neighbors say was about 75 pounds, was on the bed with the sleeping infant. Police say it attacked, biting down on the baby.

"She wanted the dog to die right away," Campbell said about her daughter's reaction, "she wanted to kill the dog."

Neighbors were awaken by panicked screams, not from the baby, but from the mother.

Jennifer Archer lives right next door. She called 911.

"They are yelling, my baby, my baby!" Archer said. "I just heard a lot of commotion, running back and forth. I saw them bring the dog out and put it back in the kennel."

Emergency officials said three people were injured in the attack -- the baby, the baby's mother and another woman. The adults may have gotten hurt trying to pry the dog off the baby.

The mother and baby were taken to a nearby hospital where the baby later died.

Police alerted the Hawaiian Humane Society which came out, took the dog away, and put her in isolation.
They don't know what kind of dog it is, just that it's female and of mixed breed.

Neighbors say at least two other dogs live at the house. Liptak's grandmother says the dog that attacked has always been a good animal.

Police have classified this as an unattended death. The Humane Society says no one has claimed ownership of the dog yet. The dog will stay at the society until officials there and police figure out what to do next.

This is not about the people at MHS - there are wonderful, loving, dedicated, talented, committed people at MHS who are doing amazing work and who are truly serving animals! This is an issue of policy, leadership (or lack of) and misplaced ideas about the true purpose of an animal rescue organization -- which is to serve animals and their communities, and to educate people about humane animal treatment.

Not for profit animal shelters and rescue organizations around the world are realizing that the old ways of operating, largely involving euthanaisa due to financial limitations, just don't serve anyone anymore.

It is unacceptable that the euthanasia of so many animals every day (as many or more than ten dogs per day at MHS, in addition to other animals at MHS) exists because of the costs associated with keeping them alive, and then spending so much more money on marketing efforts to convince the community that MHS is focused on solving the problems of animal overpopulation and human education.

MHS, as an organization, tries to restrict and constrain the information that gets out to the public - a public that pays for all of this behavior and is being forbidden to hear the truth about how their valuable taxpayer dollars are being used. How can we, as an animal loving community, ever make change for the better when we are not properly informed? Remember that saying about the pink elephant in the room that nobody speaks of?

As a seasoned professional in the animal welfare community, I have shed tears over many MHS dogs that I loved (perfectly well adjusted and well behaved dogs) and thought would be placed immediately, only to find out a few days later that those beautiful, wonderful creatures of god where put down - even though I had repeated offers to foster, train, work with or adopt many of them.

In fact, I offered volunteer services to MHS in dog training, public education, foster care, employee and volunteer training, adoption counselor services, fund raising and event planning services -- all on a volunteer basis. These attempts were mostly ignored or refused in the face of rules, limitations, restrictions, etc. I did attend multiple volunteer training sessions, (maybe a misappropriation of skills?), volunteer at several adoption events and visit elementary schools with MHS employees and volunteers. Ultimately, these rules restricted me from sharing valuable information with the public and I found other arenas in which to provide service to animals and humans.

MHS, as a government agency, is not looking for solution; it is simply collecting stray animals, providing those animals with a minimum amount of days alive for public viewing, and then systematically euthanaising them, all the while, denying the fact that it does this by deliberately not speaking of it - not even among their own employees and volunteers. Furthermore, MHS refuses to address the silent murder of these animals because they are afraid to face the reality that there are other solutions.

Public educational efforts from MHS, while valiant, are extremely limited, and generally focus around visiting schools and adoption counseling, but the true limitations are due to the restrictions, rules and regulations placed on MHS employees and volunteers by those in high ranking positions.

After over twenty years of experience working with and studying animals and animal behavior, professionally, personally and as a volunteer for countless animal welfare organizations around the world, I can honestly say that the system, as it exists, is not serving animals or their communities.

Again, this is not an issue of the individuals at MHS - the employees and volunteers alike - are doing gutwrenching, time and energy consuming, heatbreaking work to serve animals and their communities and every day, and these people make real miracles happen. As an animal lover and advocate, I am truly grateful for and in awe of their dedication and accomplishment - I see these individuals as part of the solution toward peace for all animals.

This is an issue of policy, leadership (or lack of) and misplaced ideas about the true mission of an animal rescue organization -- which is to serve animals and their communities, not just clean up the streets from strays and create a brilliant marketing campaign to convince the public that it is solving problems when it is only contributing to them by not changing with the changing world we live in.

As a community, we are moving into a stage of partnership. A partnership in all areas of life which requires us to come together as a team and say, "How can we combine our efforts and our wisdom to find more and better and alternative solutions". Ironically, we learn this from dogs: The Whole is Greater Than The Sum of its Parts - basic wolf pack mentality.

This is the charge at hand for the leadership behind MHS. Surely, we can make magic and miracles happen in our world when we unite and cooperate. I, for one, am committed to being part of that growth and positive change.

My foster family found me abandoned at a park. They are now trying to find me a loving home. They would really love to keep me because I am so sweet, cuddly and affectionate but they already have two cats (who are not that friendly). My foster family has had me spayed and I have had all my shots. (The vet says I am in great health now.)

I like to go outside, but want to cuddle up on a cushy bed too. I love attention, make myself at home rather well, and as you can see from the attached picture, I make friends easily.
