This is room and board, we ask the families to provide breakfast and dinner
according to their usual custom. We ask for a private room and access to
bathroom and occasionally laundry. We pay a stipend of $35 a day times the
number of days the student is with you to cover expenses.
We arrange and provide all of the daily transportation and students are usually out by 8am and back around 5pm. Unfortuantely we can only accept families livng between Keauhou and Makalei in Kailua-Kona.

Niche Travel Guide is a space for culturally sensitive and curious travelers to come together and share ideas, tips and experiences. We believe that each place in the world is unique and offers its own richness and learning opportunities. Our goal is to build a community around this concept to help travelers find these qualities wherever they may travel.
I'm a nursing student who will be graduating in November and I'm seeking nurses or nurse aides who have had a musculoskeletal injury related to caring for an obese patient to help me. I'm currently doing a research study on this topic and have created a short survey that should take less than 5 minutes to complete. If this applies to you or someone you know I would really appreciate it if you/they could take my survey, especially since I'm in desperate need of participants. I would also appreciate any suggestions!
We are organizing HIHAF’s first annual “A Night for Compassionate Dining” on Tuesday December 02, the day after World AIDS Day. We will enlist Participating Restaurants to donate 20% of their sales, including alcohol and beverage on this one day. Platinum Plate Sponsors donate a minimum of $1,500 of sales on this one day.
Our goal in having this event is to encourage people to dine out with their family, friends, and co-workers; celebrating life together at our local restaurants while raising money for a worthy cause. We are encouraging the support of our local community restaurants island wide and promoting economic help for our neighbors and friends who own or work in them. Now is the time to take care of one another.
Here is the commitment we need from you. We hope to enlist 70 restaurants island wide with a goal of at least 1 in every town that has a food establishment. Volunteers would hand out sponsorship letters to individual restaurants in their neighbor hoods and meet with their managers to talk up this great experience where the whole island will benefit directly. I also ask that the volunteers have a telephone follow up. Volunteers or shall we now call them Ambassadors; will be present in each restaurant on December 2nd thanking the guests for visiting and letting them know that this restaurant is donating 20% of their receipts to HIHAF. Major donors would have a HIHAF representative. Your time would be needed to contact local restaurants and help solicit friends to help you fill the Ambassador spots at as many restaurants as we can. No responsibilities for collecting money. All materials will be given to you by HIHAF.
Our push is to make the sales pitch as personal as possible, following HIHAF guidelines. Businesses are being asked to give a lot to different charities and we need to make our cause more worthy to them. So we have to persuade them that people will fill their restaurants on this one night, a typically slow night.

In exchange for providing service to departments, volunteers receive a wide range of benefits, including:

Three-month resident volunteers provide basic, routine assistance to our maintenance, kitchen or housekeeping departments. One-month Volunteer Scholars provide assistance to those departments and also have the option of working in our groundskeeping department.
Satisfaction depends on your attitude and intention, and growth comes from carrying out these tasks with a spirit of willing service. Past volunteers have found their assignments rewarding and a source of personal growth.
KITCHEN
Volunteer work involves salad bar preparation and assisting the shift leader with cooking for up to 120 people; making salad dressings; cleaning the kitchen and stocking food. Everyone working in the kitchen MUST have a current TB test.
HOUSEKEEPING
Volunteer work involves cleaning and upkeep of all the lodge rooms, the office, and common areas; laundering the bedding and towels.
MAINTENANCE, GROUNDSKEEPING AND AESTHETICS
Volunteers on these teams collaborate to keep Kalani looking beautiful and functioning smoothly and safely. Tasks include collecting and hauling trash; compost and recycling; assisting with general facilities construction, maintenance, painting and repair; planting, trimming, weeding, harvesting of tropical fruits and fresh herbs; security patrolling and pest control.
Please note that many positions in these departments are physically strenuous. All positions require that participants be of sound physical and mental health and provide proof of health insurance coverage. Individuals with health challenges are encouraged to contact us and discuss possible volunteer placement before applying.
