AmeriCorps Member Working With Friends of Kona Pacific Public Charter School

Make a real difference in your community by assisting in the development of new farming areas on the 40-acre Kanaueue Learning Center in Kealakekua on Hawai'i Island. You'll be involved in activities designed to provide healthy food for our vulnerable community members at risk for food insecurity. This project is also an incredible, dynamic educational opportunity for you to gain valuable field experience in organic farm development and management -- skills that are desperately needed on this island that currently imports almost 90% of its fresh produce. Members will assist with increasing the rate of existing farm development so we can deliver more food to the people who need it.

What You Will Do
AmeriCorps Members will be engaged in critical farm development activities such as land, soil and farm site preparation, creating a nursery and propagating plant material, compost development, crop planting and maintenance, and other farm activities.

What You Will Learn
You'll be working under the guidance of a master organic farmer to learn valuable skills involved in developing and operating an organic farm in Hawai'i. A robust curriculum will cover subjects such as: Sustainable Agriculture techniques and methods; Permaculture Design and Principals; Compost Basics; Soil Health; Nursery Management and propagation methods; Fruit Tree Care; Row Crop Management and Agriculture Infrastructure.

What We Are Looking For
Our ideal members are passionate about building a healthy future for Hawai'i Island agriculture; motivated to serve in our rural, economically struggling community; seeking an opportunity to gain training and hands-on experience for their career, and committed to working hard in order to make a difference. Members must be 18 years or older, be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident of the USA, and hold a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.

About Friends
Friends' mission is to support the continuing development and operations of Kona Pacific Public Charter School, and to develop sustainable natural resource management systems and community-based food production and educational opportunities at the Kanaueue Learning Center. In partnership with Kona Pacific and other community organizations, Friends implements the W.H.O.L.E. Food Service Program, which currently provides federally reimbursable meals for more than 400 vulnerable community members. Our vision is to become a regional leader in the development of sustainable food systems that improve the quality, access, and availability of locally produced food, and to contribute to a thriving community in which no one need go hungry.

AmeriCorps Members will serve half time (mornings), for nine months (900 hours total) and will receive a stipend of $4,000, an education award of $2,822, student loan forbearance while in service, and great experience and training in a field that interests you!

The program will begin on October 1, 2014.

We provide skills training, opportunities to build your résumé and work portfolio, career counseling at the end of your service, and a staff mentor throughout the year to provide support and guidance. Friends of Kona Pacific Public Charter School and AmeriCorps are equal opportunity organizations.
